The Three-Layer System
Every well-lit room uses three types of lighting working together. Remove one layer and the room either feels flat or uncomfortable.
- Ambient: The base layer. Ceiling fixtures, recessed downlights, or a central pendant that fills the room with general light.
- Task: Focused light for specific activities. Desk lamps, under-cabinet kitchen lighting, bedside reading lights.
- Accent: Decorative and dramatic. Wall sconces, LED strips, picture lights that highlight art or architecture.
Colour Temperature
Stick to 2700–3000K (warm white) for living areas and bedrooms. Use 4000K (neutral white) in kitchens and bathrooms where accuracy matters. Mixing temperatures in the same room creates visual confusion.
Dimmers Are Non-Negotiable
Install dimmer switches on every ambient circuit. The ability to shift from bright work mode to warm evening atmosphere is what separates a functional room from a truly liveable one.
